Read uphill or downhill using level structures

To judge whether a putt is uphill or downhill, first compare the height of the ball to the hole, then find a true horizontal reference in the surroundings - such as houses or the framing of nearby structures, which are normally level - and read the slope against that level line. Used to detect subtle elevation change that is hard to see on the green itself.
