Walk a circle around the hole to find the straight putt
As an alternative to reading fray marks on the cup, the instructor finds the straight putt by walking a semi-circle around the hole and feeling the slope underfoot. He walks feeling downhill, downhill, and the moment he crosses over and feels like he has started going uphill he takes one step back; that point is the straight putt. He repeats the walk on the other side to define the upper straight putt as well.
