Fit a golf ball from the bottom up, driver last

The instructor advises fitting a golf ball from the bottom up rather than the top down: start on the putting green, then work through chipping, pitches, wedges, short irons and long irons, and look at driver last. His stated reasoning is that the driver is not where you are scoring, so the ball should be evaluated on the scoring clubs first.
