Keep a set pitching and gap wedge for average golfers
For the average player, the instructor tends to lead them into a set pitching wedge and set gap wedge. Modern irons already go a bit further, so golfers hit many full shots with those clubs. Since they rarely chip with the gap wedge, the instructor still keeps it in the set as a wedge for those full shots.
