Trail-hand palm-on-grip drill for shaft lean

A drill the instructor offers for improving shaft lean through contact, which he calls hard to do but simple to learn. As you grip the club, place the trail-hand palm on the side of the grip without wrapping the fingers, so its angle matches the leading edge of the clubface, then make a few practice swings keeping the palm looking toward the target. He says having the palm on the side with the fingers off reduces the tendency to flick the trail hand, which he calls the culprit for losing shaft lean and adding too much loft through contact. Once comfortable, he says to address a ball in the middle of a narrow stance with the palm looking the same direction as the face and strike it while holding the finish, retaining the angle between the shaft and the trail wrist.

Try it

  1. Take your trail hand and as you grip the club, place the palm on the side of the club, don't wrap your fingers around, and complete the grip so its angle matches the leading edge of the club face
  2. Before you hit a golf ball, make a few practice swings keeping the palm looking toward the target
  3. Once comfortable, address a golf ball, assume that grip with the ball in the middle of a narrow stance, palm looking in the same direction as the face
  4. Strike the ball as you hold the finish and return to contact, with the angle between the shaft and the right wrist retained
