Play the putt-chip off the toe for downhill control
For a controlled, checking shot, the instructor teaches a 'putt-chip': raise the handle, set the ball off the toe of the club, get the hands high, use a putting grip, and make a little putting stroke while striking out of the toe. Hitting it off the toe puts extra spin on the first bounce.
