Check impact with a lie board's leading-edge mark
An impact-check variation for when you do not have a bunker: get a lie board (often available at golf shops, even at public courses), put it on the bottom of your club, and do the same half-swing drill, then read where the mark lands on the sticker. The instructor says a mark on the back of the club is not good for impact; you want it more toward the leading edge, where the shaft is leaning forward.
