Read the lie to pick shallow or steep chip ingredients
The instructor's framing for short game around the greens: read the lie and choose steepening or shallowing 'ingredients.' Steepen (open stance, arms up, driving down) on a really tight lie, a downslope, compact sand, or loose soil where you need to get into the back of the ball. When the lie is not too bad and the ground is fairly soft, use the shallow ingredients (aim right, wider stance, more rotation and release) so the ball lands much softer.
