Porzak describes the correct hand path in the takeaway using an alignment rod as a 'train track': the hands travel straight down the line of your feet to the set position, where everything is directly in front of you. His cue is to take the club away 'down the hallway before you turn it up the escalator': the hands go straight to pocket high, following the direction of the turn, before the club works upward.
