Rough with a cushion: attack steeper, leading edge down
When the ball sits up in rough with a cushion of grass behind it, attack more steeply, bringing the club down into the back of the ball with the leading edge more down. That gets to the bottom of the ball and pops it out; the trade-off is the ball comes out a little hotter.
