If a deep interlocking grip lengthens the lead thumb so it peeks through or blocks the trail hand from covering it, the instructor recommends interlocking only halfway down the little finger and forefinger. This shortens the lead thumb and lets the trail hand cover it while keeping a neutral-looking grip.
