Read the fairway bunker lie before chasing distance

In a fairway bunker, read the lie first to decide whether maximum distance is even realistic. A green-light lie lets you see the back of the ball with no sand getting between clubface and ball, so you can clip it off the top and still get full distance. A ball nestled down makes maximum distance essentially impossible, so adjust your expectations accordingly.
