Read the lie before playing the high lob
For the high lob that lands soft (release three), the instructor stresses reading the lie first. To slide the club under the ball you need some grass beneath it; from a real hard-pan lie he would play a different shot entirely. A lie with grass under the ball is what makes the indirect, slide-underneath contact possible.
