Use a longer backswing so a short shot stays smooth
For a short greenside shot of roughly 15 yards through the air, Dan says do not leave yourself too short a backswing. A tiny (about five-yard) backswing forces you to drive or hit at the ball, whereas a fuller (about 20-yard) backswing lets you swing smooth and soft.
