Train shaft pitch and hand path with an alignment rod

An at-home drill for training hand path and shaft pitch using a club and an alignment rod, or a broomstick or another golf club if you don't have a rod. Assume your grip and set the club head behind the alignment rod as if to hit it, then raise it so the handle sits right around your belly button as a first reference, keeping that club-head-to-belly-button relationship as you start back while the hands, arms and club move the first few feet away together. From there a little wrist hinge and a slight amount of arm swing has the grip looking down at the rod, and at the top the hands are in the middle of the chest with the shaft pitched at the tracer line, before you rotate up and back down into the 'go zone' driven by body rotation. The instructor says that when the handle disappears behind your lead side from rotation, the club will come in straight so you hit the ball more flush and more accurately.

Try it

  1. assume your grip set the club head down behind the alignment rod as if you intend to hit it
  2. just move the club head up so that the handle is stuck right around your belly button this is your first reference
  3. from here to start back you want to keep that club head belly button relationship
  4. my hands and my arms and the club move the first few feet away from the golf the golf ball in this case the alignment rod together
  5. from there a little bit of wrist hinge and a slight amount of arm swing should have this club grip looking down to that alignment rod
  6. you set up basically for the top of your backswing hands in the middle of the chest shaft pitch at that red tracer line
  7. you just rotate up then you rotate back down and from here you're in the go zone now just some body rotation
