Why an inside hand path forces you to time the face

When the club comes in from well inside (the coach cites six or seven degrees from the inside), the face has to be a few degrees shut through impact just to hit the ball straight, which means relying on face rotation. Getting the hands more up and in front of you makes it easier to control the clubface through impact rather than having to time that rotation.
