Close the gap and keep the lead leg flexed for compression
Hanson's exercise for better downswing compression with irons: close up the gap from the top of the swing and keep some bend or flex in the lead leg, moving slowly down. He explains that a wider gap loses angle and tends to make you stand up and flip — producing fat and thin shots — while a lead leg that stays bent moves further forward; if it straightens too quickly you spin out and lose compression. Keeping the lead leg flexed helps recenter, leaving plenty of time to straighten later.
