Move the ball back to learn ball-first contact
If you are hitting the ground, thinning, or fatting it, move the ball back in your stance and hit small swings (not full swings) to feel the handle ahead of the clubhead and strike the ball then the ground. Once you own that ball-first sensation, return the ball to its correct position - about a club width inside your lead heel - keeping the same feeling. Starting the ball back before moving it forward makes downward, ball-first contact much easier to learn.
