Chip off the toe to stop the heel digging into the grain

From a tight into-the-grain lie, play the shot off the toe of the wedge so the heel — which is shaved down and tends to get stuck when golfers lower their hands and body — is taken out of play. Stand much closer with a higher handle, ball just inside the right heel, and use limited wrist hinge to pick the ball cleanly off the top. The toe is designed to slide, making ground interaction almost impossible; the instructor says most tour pros play this shot from through-the-green into-grain lies.

Try it

  1. stand in much closer to the ball
  2. get the handle much higher than your normal position
  3. make your regular grip with the ball position just inside the right heel
  4. go back and through with limited wrist hinge
  5. pick it off the top with the toe

Why this context matters

Tight lie through the green, into the grain on sticky zoysia.
