Broomstick chest drill: point grip end at the ball

A drill to feel the correct downward shoulder turn: lay a club or broomstick across your chest at the collarbone, get into your golf posture, and turn your shoulders so the grip end of the club points down toward the ball. If you've been a level turner this will feel really steep; Saguto notes he is deliberately exaggerating the move so most people can feel the downward turn.

Try it

  1. Take a club or a broomstick or some straight object and place it across your chest, right around the collarbone area.
  2. Get in your posture, nice and relaxed like you're going to play golf.
  3. Turn the shoulders so that the butt of the club, the grip end, is pointing down towards the golf ball.

Why this context matters

A feel/exaggeration drill; the real-swing turn is less steep than the drill's exaggerated position.
