Use a lower-lofted wedge, hit farther back for distance
For a longer bunker shot the instructor switches to a lower-lofted club, a pitching wedge instead of a 56 degree, and moves his center of gravity a little farther behind the ball so he hits farther back in the sand. He explains that the farther back you hit the less spin and more release you get, while hitting closer to the ball produces more spin. He keeps the lower body planted and the club face firm through impact so it doesn't close down and chunk.
