Spin a bunker shot with a late match-strike release

To spin a shot from sand, use a driver-whip stance with the left foot flared about 45 degrees, the left knee over that foot, and the ball one to two balls inside the left heel; placing it too far forward can produce excessive sand contact. Open the face before taking the grip, settle into the sand, then hinge and turn. Hold the wrist angle slightly longer and release later, like striking a match at the bottom, to generate more clubhead speed; keep the weight firmly over the left knee because swaying produces inconsistent impact points.

Try it

  1. Set up as a normal driver whip stance, left foot out to 45, left knee pushing over the foot.
  2. Play the ball a little further back, one to two balls inside the left heel - not too far forward.
  3. Open the face, then take the grip after you have opened the face.
  4. Settle down into the sand, hinge it and turn.
  5. Hold the angle a bit longer and release a little later, like striking the match at the bottom.
  6. Keep your weight firmly over the left knee at all times so you do not sway.
