Alignment stick in the grip to slot the downswing

The coach shows a drill using an alignment/tour stick jammed into the back of the grip with about 10 inches sticking out the top. Set it at your right hip, and from the top of the swing turn the stick and bring it down slowly in front of you, keeping the stick from touching the left side or lead leg into impact. He says this exaggerates the move so you feel the elbow and wrist getting into position to slot the club into a correct delivery.

Try it

  1. Get your alignment stick and jam it in the back of the grip, about 10 inches out of the top.
  2. Set it up at your right hip.
  3. When you get up to the top, turn the stick and bring it down slowly in front of you.
  4. Into impact, don't let the stick touch on the left side or the lead leg.

Why this context matters

Setup at the right hip is deliberately unlike a normal address position, to exaggerate the sensation.
