Play the odds so a miss still leaves a makeable putt
The instructor treats a greenside shot as an odds game: he picks the shot that gives him the best chance to get close, but that still leaves only a 5, 6, or 7 footer if he misses a little. A low-odds shot might not reach the green at all or get bladed over it. He weighs which option keeps the miss makeable.
