Set an alignment rod as a takeaway guide

Using an alignment rod as a takeaway guide, the coach matches the rod to the angle of the shaft and places it just far enough away that it is there during the backswing, tilting it up slightly to help keep the club a little more in front of the golfer. He notes that on the downswing you are not even close to hitting the rod, so it only affects the backswing.
