On a downhill lie, setting the weight forward delofts the club, so an 8-iron effectively plays like a 7-iron and the ball comes out low and too fast. The instructor does the opposite of the uphill lie and clubs down to a higher-lofted club, moving from an 8-iron to a 9-iron.
