Match chip loft to green firmness

For the chip-and-run, the instructor matches loft to how the greens are playing. On soaked, slow winter greens you can fire at the pin with much less loft because you need speed; when greens firm up you switch to a more lofted wedge to control the ball and get more spin. He uses a 52 degree for this 20-22 yard shot on firm greens, versus a 9-iron or 8-iron on soft winter greens.
