Read grain from the burnt edge around the hole
To read grain near the green, look at the hole: after a cup has been cut for a day or so, one side develops a 'burnt' edge where the grass grows out of the hole. That burnt edge shows the direction the grain is growing, and the same grain runs on the fairway. It won't show first thing in the morning — only after the hole has been out for a while.
