Hit down on a 3-wood off the ground, not up

The speaker's father complained that he either doesn't make good contact with his 3-wood or hits it up in the air so it floats and goes nowhere. The speaker's point: when the ball is on the ground, or on a very low tee, you're not hitting up on a 3-wood but down on it, and the best players in the world hit down on their 3-wood. Even with the ball on the ground you'll often see a little pinch of turf after the ball.
