Prop drill: keep lower body stacked to strike ball first

The prop drill trains you to strike the ball before the ground with any club. Set up imagining a stake running through your lead side that your trail foot props up, pushing your lower body underneath your upper body while keeping your head in the middle of your stance. As you swing back, keep pushing the trail (right) leg toward the target so the trail pocket rotates around and creates an arc; that gives you the space to deliver the club so at impact you strike the ball, then the ground.

Try it

  1. Imagine there's almost like a stake running through your lead side, and your trail foot is going to prop up that stake.
  2. Push that lower body underneath your upper body, and keep the head right in the middle of your stance.
  3. As you're swinging back, keep pushing that right leg this way towards the target so it pushes your trail pocket around and creates an arc.
  4. Now when you come into impact, you're going to strike the ball, then the ground.

Why this context matters

Taught through the example of his student Max, who caught the ground behind the ball and sometimes topped it because he 'twisted' in the downswing, shifting his path out-to-in.
