Choke down to hit in-between yardages

When a yardage falls between clubs, the instructor chokes down on the longer club to take a little speed off rather than forcing a wedge. His example: around 140 or 138 yards is too far for his wedge but his nine iron (about 145) is too long, so he chokes down on the nine iron.
