Use the front shoulder to govern chip distance
The coach says to think about the shoulders controlling the chip so you know the distance of the swing. He treats the front shoulder as the governor of the swing: it just goes back slightly, not even passing his chin, and that's the chip shot. He observes that people who swing too far on a chip are usually thinking hands and arms only with the shoulder not involved, and that using the shoulder is an easy way to keep the chip swing shorter.
