Lay up when the fairway runs out

On a par five where the fairway seems to run out and trees make the visual awkward, the instructor chooses two iron and treats it as a likely three-shot hole. Later he frames the next shot as a layup: cover the left bunker, send the ball up the left side, and leave a controlled yardage.
