Same hinge feels abrupt with a wedge, subtle with a driver

The coach says with a wedge the hinge distance is much shorter and feels more abrupt, while with a driver, where he's wider and the hands are forward addressing a ball up in the stance, there's about twice the distance to cover to reach the same spot, so it feels more subtle and less abrupt. It's the same amount of hinge at the same place regardless.
