Thumbs-on-back drill to feel the body turn

The instructor demonstrates a thumbs drill to help you feel body motion instead of using the arms. Place your thumbs on your back at the narrowest part of your waist, take your setup, and use the left thumb to push the left side of your back to turn while keeping your head still and your shoulders relaxed. Through the finish, the right thumb keeps pushing until the left leg posts and the upper body turns through. Then make swings while imagining the thumbs still pressing against your back, thinking left thumb, torso turn, torso push rather than arms.

Try it

  1. Find the smallest part in your waist, in your trunk, between your belly button and your chest.
  2. Have your thumbs on your back, and take your setup.
  3. Keep your eyes in the same spot; make sure your head doesn't move away.
  4. Use the left thumb to push your left side of the back to turn.
  5. Don't use your shoulders; keep them relaxed away from your ears.
  6. Keep the right thumb pushing until this leg posts and the upper body turns through.

Why this context matters
