Smash-the-sand line drill for solid impact

An impact drill done in a bunker. Draw a line between your feet, take the club halfway back, and try to smash the sand at the line or just in front of it; do it ten times, with a beginner maybe getting two or three out of ten and a goal of eight out of ten, keeping the swing to about halfway. The instructor likes the bunker because the sand is a constraint that makes it obvious how the hands, arms and body should work at impact, and you can feel the resistance of the sand and the energy the club head gets into it.

Try it

  1. Draw a line in between your feet
  2. You take it halfway back and you are going to try and smash the sand with the golf club at the line or in front of the line
  3. Do it 10 times; your goal would be eight out of 10 times

Why this context matters

Done in a bunker, but the target skill is impact/strike, not bunker play.
