Use a hybrid with a putting grip to chip into the grain
Into the grain, a hybrid is a friendly option: its wide sole slides through the grain and can't dig in, and it carries a little more speed than a putter so distance control is easier. Set up with a nice high handle and a putting grip, then simply make a putting stroke — the ball skips a little and rolls out toward the hole.
