Chip a low spinner instead of a big flop from short range
Instead of trying to hit a big high flop from around 20 yards, the coach sets up like a pitch or chip shot: feet about six inches apart (at most shoulder width), ball played back, face open, toe alignment open, then takes a little chipping swing and thumps the trailing edge. The result was lower-trajectory shots that carried more backspin and were far more consistent than the high flop, because the grooves get a stronger gear effect against the back of the ball.
