Use a rod near your hands to stay on the shaft plane
To keep the hands down near the original shaft plane, Craig Hanson uses a training aid placed close to the hands so they can't move up in the downswing; keeping the hands down where they started with the butt back makes the release easier. The at-home version is to jam an alignment stick into the ground about a fist-width from the hands and swing to get the feel.

Why this context matters
Craig improvises a training aid (a foam swim noodle on a microphone stand); the at-home version uses an alignment stick placed a fist-width from the hands.
