Gauge putt distance by your stroke length
For a short-to-mid putt, control distance with stroke length and an even tempo rather than a long, decelerating stroke. Feel a tick-tock and hold the finish. As a rough guide for that length of putt, the putter should travel to just outside your back foot on the backstroke and the same distance through. A backswing that is too long forces you to slow down.
