Cock the trail wrist to lock the elbow, preload the handle
The instructor teaches a trail-hand grip he calls the gunslinger hold, holding the club so the trail wrist hinges and cocks up rather than staying flat. Cocking that trail wrist draws the trail elbow inward, which he calls the key to ball striking. The result is that the handle sits naturally ahead without having to manipulate it during the swing.
