Laying back off the tee can cost width and distance
The coach argues against hitting an iron off this tee. Laying back leaves you in a narrower spot short of the fairway bunker, whereas the spot up by the bunker is the widest part of the fairway. The shorter tee shot also leaves a longer approach, an eight iron into the green instead of a short wedge from about 84 yards.
