Play the 3 wood well forward in your stance
Because a 3 wood has only about 14.5 degrees of loft, the instructor warns that a ball too far back in the stance leads to hitting down on it and de-lofting the club. He plays his 3 wood pretty far forward, somewhere between five inches inside the lead foot and inside the lead heel, and never behind that, to give the club the best chance of getting the ball into the air.
