Elbow to belly button, then shake hands at post-impact
The coach's tray drill for the release: at post-impact, point your fingers forward and 'shake hands' with an imaginary person standing in front of you, rather than flipping through. Flipping (leading with the lead hand instead of releasing) is like giving someone you just met a low five; a handshake is the goal. The recap cues are balance the food (tray), point the elbow at your belly button, then shake hands at post-impact. Done right you stay in your angle with no thrusting forward, no spinning out, no going over the top, and the face releases.
