Read slice vs hook as catching the ball late or early
The speaker frames the moment of impact as a door swinging open and closed along the swing arc. A slice comes from catching the ball too late on the arc, when the 'door' is already open so the club is heading left, which combined with an open face creates slice spin. A hook is the opposite: catching the ball too early, before the face has had a chance to square up, so the face aims out to the right.
