Grieve's five-step short game process
Grieve's five-step routine for every short-game shot: view the situation, check the lie, visualize the shot required, choose the club and release, then play and review. He stresses the lie as the most important factor because it dictates how the ball comes out, and reviewing each shot to build a memory bank.

- View the situation - format (stroke or match play), how safe or risky, how far the pin is, the wind, and the green speed and break
- Check the lie (most important), since the lie dictates how the ball will come out
- Visualize and paint the picture of the shot required - the landing spot and trajectory to get the ball close
- Choose the club you will use and choose the shot/release you will play
- Play the shot, then review it - what went well and what to do better - to build your memory bank
