More lag opens the face, so feel the face square

Craig explains that for the normal club golfer, trying to create more lag often leaves the clubface open at impact. He suggests a slow-motion exercise to notice the face is square, and says the average golfer will probably need to feel some squaring or rotation of the face, whereas top players tend to do it without thinking. He warns that if you create a lot of lag but cannot match it up, you tend to hit it off the hosel or push thin shots out to the right.
