Play the soft landing shot only from a green-light lie

The soft landing shot needs a "green light lie" with some grass under the ball and a little give in the ground, so the club sits slightly lower than the ball. It is an indirect contact: you land the club back where it started and slide it under the ball, which is how it lands really softly. From a lie that is sitting down and firm you can't get the club under it, and you can't land the ball that softly with a ball-first contact.

Why this context matters

The 'soft landing shot' / 'release two' - a greenside shot meant to land, spin a little, and trickle to the hole when you have little green to work with.
