Tee the ball up while learning a new swing path

The coach warns that when you change to the new out-to-under path the club stops chopping down, so you run the risk of topping the ball. His advice while it is new is to tee the ball up a little bit to give yourself a grace period, and he reassures that topping the ball is okay when you change the path like this.
