Chip from a narrow stance with weight on the left foot

For a chip shot, the instructor has the golfer stand very narrow — about a fist-width — and set roughly 60% of weight on the center/front of the left foot. She says that if the weight stays on the right foot it gets dragged back and cannot return to the ball, which is what makes the topped ball come out.
